Daily word game
The daily word game is a free puzzle: guess one secret six-letter word in five tries. You start with one clue, and every wrong guess unlocks another. It runs in your browser, needs no account and gives everyone the same puzzle each day.
How to play the daily word game
- Read the first clue. You start with one clue about the secret six-letter word.
- Type a six-letter guess. Use your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter.
- Read the colours. Green means the right letter in the right place. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in another place. Grey means it is not in the word.
- Unlock the next clue. Every wrong guess reveals another, more obvious clue. You have five tries.
- Share your result. When you finish, copy your colour grid and share it. A new puzzle arrives at 00:00 UTC.
What the colours mean
| Colour | Meaning | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Right letter, right place | Keep it in that position |
| Yellow | In the word, wrong place | Try it in another position |
| Grey | Not in the word | Avoid it in later guesses |
The colours work together with the clues. A clue tells you what kind of word you are looking for, while the colours tell you which letters it contains. When the two agree you can usually narrow the answer to a handful of words very quickly, which is the satisfying moment the game is built around.
Why six letters and five clues?
Six letters is long enough to make the word feel like a real discovery, yet short enough to finish in a few minutes. Five clues give the puzzle a gentle difficulty curve: the opening clue is deliberately vague, the middle clues narrow the topic, and the final clue is close to a giveaway. That structure means a player who thinks carefully can always win, while a player who only guesses letters will find it harder. It also makes the result easy to share, because the colour grid shows how quickly you solved it without spoiling the word.
Daily word game tips
Treat the first clue as a hint about the topic rather than a definition. Use your first guess to test common letters, such as vowels and the letters E, R, T and N, so the colours tell you as much as possible. Do not repeat letters you have ruled out, and remember that a letter can appear twice. As the clues become more obvious, switch from testing letters to proposing real words that fit every clue so far. The last clue is usually close to a giveaway, so a careful player can almost always finish.
Your streak counts consecutive days you solve the puzzle. If you miss a day it resets, so the streak is a gentle reason to come back. Stats are kept only in your browser, which means clearing site data also clears them.
